Coping with a family member with a mental illness can have a huge impact on a young person, disrupting normal routines such as schooling, social life and future plans. It is estimated that there are around 175,000 young carers in the UK, but such is the stigma surrounding mental health problems, it is thought actual numbers are much higher.
PS Young Support is a Swedish, web-based project, linked to The Vardal Institute – the Swedish Institute for Health Sciences – and Gothenburg University, that offers support, education and information for young people coping with these issues. Along with links to range of publications, research and publications on the subject, it is involved in studies on the effect of web-based support to this often invisible group. It is hoping this research will increase knowledge of such young people’s life situation and mental health, so appropriate care can be given.
