A top nurse has called for a “fundamental transformation” and “change at all levels”.
Hilary Garratt, director of nursing at NHS England told senior nurses attending the QNI conference that nursing needs to be “person centred and that they must work with patients as “true partners”.
There needs to be a shared agenda and joint agendas, she explained, with nurses telling patients: “I am here to work with you”..
Garratt was keen to acknowledge that although many systems have already achieved this integrated care, NHS England is there to offer support to those who need the help to achieve this.
She also called upon health professionals to share outcomes between themselves so they can “put evidence into practice”.
“Community nursing is so important and we need to invest more to drive it forward,” she added. “We need to enthuse and energise people and make every contact count.”
